Drive Towards Renewables

Rural is acutely aware of the impact that we as a human race are having on mother Earth. As such, it has implemented various measures to assist in reducing harmful effects and to address environmental concerns:

  1. Making users aware of the detrimental impact of using electricity by providing on each invoice, the qty CO2 released into the atmosphere together with the amount of fresh water consumed in the making of the electricity having been consumed.
  2. Making available affordable energy management tools, as supplied by Rural, to each electricity user.
    • Electricity consumption profiles indicating where and when electricity is being consumed.
    • Manual and remote disconnection switches.
    • Centralised electronic timers.
    • Availability of energy efficiency advice.
  3. Providing renewable electricity from wind turbines as an alternative option available to electricity users.
    • Generated on site via wind turbines.
      1. 6kW
      2. 15kW
      3. 750kW
      4. 1.5MW
    • Generated off site in one of the Group’s newly planned large scale wind farms.
      1. 18MW planned wind farm in Saldanha – Western Cape [Ground secured; EIA in process; first units set for commissioning at the end of 2010]
      2. 24MW planned wind farm in Mpumalanga [Ground secured, EIA in process; first units set for commissioning at the end of 2011]
